The 60-year-old Australian actress recalled when, after the birth of her son Cy in a London hospital in 2003, she was given a bottle of champagne as a gift but was advised by her two naturopaths not to drink it immediately after childbirth because of her hormones.
“Of course not,” she replied to the medical assistants, with whom she was very close. However, she admitted that “after they left and I was alone with Cy in my arms, all I could think about was that bottle of champagne in the ice bucket.”
In 1998, she had her first son, Flynn, with her former partner, French financier Arpad “Arki” Busson, 61, and settled in London. During the early days of Flynn’s life, he had many health issues and lived in the hospital.
Arki would often leave Elle alone with the baby during that time, which caused a lot of anxiety for the actress. “At night, after putting him to sleep, I would find myself relaxing with a vodka,” she later recalled during an AA meeting.
At that time, she thought about going to rehab, but Arki told her she was fine. “I think he was scared. He didn’t want me to be away from him, and I think he was also afraid of change.”
She went to a rehabilitation clinic in Arizona after battling addiction, and her relationship with Arki lasted a few years after her return, but ultimately, it did not survive her sobriety. They are now on good terms, though their separation was quite controversial.
Arki has supported Macpherson as she battles breast cancer without undergoing traditional medical treatments. “Every day, I actively and deliberately nourish my well-being. Cancer is no longer an option for me. Just as drinking is no longer an option for me.”
